My visits to two Dutch schools

I guess I already mentioned on this blog a plan to visit two schools to present about Sri Lanka during my time in the Netherlands. Well that experience was a blast !!! one that I thoroughly enjoyed through nervous as the kids didn’t understand any English. I had to skip one morning of IPM to make this happen but it was worth every second for me.

With the help of Helen ( Mrs. Deumer, the mother of Juriaan an intern in Sri Lanka) who basically gave the explanation in Dutch and translated my comments as I showed them parts of a video on Sri Lanka. Then they were given time to ask questions where things became more interesting J There was one kid who even recognized the Cricket t-shirt I was wearing and ask me about that.

The questions were not the most obvious from why I was wearing the hat? to if I was married ? ( that was the best one J ) to if I’m poor or well to do. The experience is an once in a life time kind of a thing, especially considering I was there only for 2 weeks in the country out of which 10 days were for IPM.

I was also asked for my MSN at the first school and now I have about 5 Dutch kids saying hallo everytime I log in. Conversations are not long with their English knowledge and my Dutch understanding not being very good. But we manage few words and sometimes I use an online English to Dutch translator to get the message across.

I’ve promised them that I would write a letter in Dutch to them soon ( with help of Juriaan of course J ) and I intend to start on that over the weekend. I really appreciate Juriaan’s and his parents effort in making this possible for me.
